Attack on our Soldiers at URI
I am amused to see people tweeting and shouting 'revenge' against Pakistan. Some of us are posting an old clip of Modi and Amit Shah's false bravado about dealing with Pakistan. These were immature statements made to please voters. As CM, Modi could afford to take a militant stance against Pakistan. Who really cared what he thought as a CM? As a PM, to execute what he said a few years ago will be suicidal.
There is no point in retaliating with military action against Pakistan, the soldier killings notwithstanding. This is precisely what Pakistan and Pak-supported terror groups want. We will play into their hands. The attack on our army base is an intelligence failure. You cannot stop such attacks by attacking Pakistan. They will only increase by the dozen. A war will excite Pakistani fidayeens, because more funds will flow into their coffers to fight India.
I like the Baloch strategy played by India. Hit where it hurts the most. Press the raw nerve. Look how Pakistan has gone mad at us. And look at the way the Balochi leaders have responded to one statement from our PM. Support to Balochistan is just a trailer.
Wars in modern world are fought with economic might, not military firepower. Modi has built an international circle of friends through his foreign visits. These relations need to be used now to cast economic/terror funding sanctions and diplomatic & political pressure on Pakistan. We can't make jingoistic statements like what Ram Madhav said - "For one tooth, the complete jaw. Days of so-called strategic restraint are over." It is not only irresponsible, it is also wrong English ;)
I am not a defence expert, neither am I a foreign affairs or finance expert. But common sense tells me that a guy who drives a BMW should never take on a tempo or an auto rickshaw on a busy crowded street. Repairing a dent on a BMW will cost more than the price of an old tempo. India is the BMW. So it needs to be careful.
A single surgical air strike on Pakistan and the share markets will tumble beyond repair. A surgical airstrike would cost India 15-20,000 crores of market wealth - Rupee will fall, FIIs will get nervous, new investments will be put on hold. In 1999, during the Kargil war, in 4 days, the market fell by 10%. Today, that would mean 3000 points fall in stock markets. Can India afford this?
Why can't we rather spend this 20K crores to buy advanced surveillance equipments like drones and satellite monitoring systems? Every soldier's life is precious to us. I would handover these 20k crores to someone like Israel. They will tape up our borders beyond recognition. They hate Islamic terror outfits themselves, so they will do it with a lot more focus and passion ;)
What will surgical airstrikes achieve? In the larger scheme of things, it will achieve nothing, except making us feel good as a nation. What use is such feel good feeling? It's a mirage. Tweeting for revenge sitting in our homes is an easy thing to do. Today 17 soldiers are dead, tomorrow 170 soldiers will die because the nation wants "revenge". Who will we hold responsible then?
I fully support Modi's measured stance in retaliating back to Pakistan. He is right and we should allow him time and space to decide what is best for the country. Allow him to calibrate a response and not react because we want him to.

UFBU CIRCULAR No. UFBU/2013/4 dt. 12.8.2013
Bipartite talks with IBA
Another round of
bipartite talks took place today in Mumbai between IBA and UFBU on our demands
for wage revision. IBA was represented
by their Negotiating Committee led by its Chairman Shri T M Bhasin. UFBU was
represented by all our nine constituent unions.
The meeting condoled the death of Com. R J Sridharan, Chairman, AIBOA,
who was in the negotiating committee till 9th Bipartite Wage
Revision.
The meeting was held in a
cordial atmosphere and discussions were fruitful. In the day-long discussions held, satisfactory decisions on some
of the important issues could be arrived at.
Continuing
the discussions of the last round of talks held on 7th June, 2013, we
emphasised the need for IBA to expedite and conclude the settlement in a time
bound manner. We also asked them to
react and respond to the issues like date of effect for commencement of the
revised wages, consumer price index point upto which Dearness Allowance is to
be merged with basic pay for construction of revised pay scales, quantum of
wage revision, etc.
Date
of effect: In response, the IBA agreed that the new wage
settlement would be effective from 1st November, 2012, i.e. the date from which
the 10th Bipartite Settlement is due.
Merger
of DA for constructing revised Pay Scales: IBA explained their constraints to consider
merger of Dearness Allowance at higher index points. After prolonged
discussions and on the insistence of the UFBU for merger of D.A at a higher level
to enable construction of Pay Scales in a reasonable manner looking to the Pay
Scales of employees and officers in comparable sectors, IBA agreed and conceded
to merge Dearness Allowance upto 4440 Consumer Price Index i.e. 401 slabs and
construct new pay scales accordingly.
Increase in wage load: On the
offer of the wage load increase, IBA wanted to study the cost impact of the
merger before responding. However, the UFBU reiterated its demand that
the offer should be exclusive of superannuation cost and improvements in other
welfare measures. IBA indicated that the
same would be kept in mind by them.
REIUBURSEMENT
OF HOSPITALISATION EXPENSES: To
our demand for 100% reimbursement of hospitalisation expenses incurred by the
employees/officers for self and eligible family members, IBA offered
introduction of mediclaim policy facility under which hospitalisation expenses
would be reimbursed by the insurance company upto Rs. 2 lacs for substaff, Rs.
3 lacs for clerical staff and Rs. 4 lacs for officers per year. Looking to the
various implications of switching over to the new scheme and the need to
examine the pros and cons of the scheme, we said that a detailed study is
required on the contents of the scheme offered before responding.
Management’s
issues: The management’s issues
like introduction of cost to company method, Fixed Pay and Variable Pay concept
were discussed and UFBU has given its strong views against the same. However, the matter remained inconclusive.
Compassionate
ground appointment Scheme: Another
vital issue, much dearer to all the bank employees, which is relentlessly being
pursued by the UFBU is restoration of compassionate appointments in the Banking
Industry. IBA informed us in today's meeting that its recommendations for introduction
of compassionate appointment scheme on similar lines prevailing in Central
Government for its employees has been sent to Ministry of Finance, Govt. of
India for its approval. No doubt, it is an important step in the direction of
restoring compassionate appointments in the Banking Industry which is a long pending
demand. While thanking the IBA for the positive step taken in this direction,
we earnestly hope that the Government would accord its approval at the
earliest.
Comrades, in today’s
discussions, we could arrive at conclusion on two vital issues i.e. date of
effect and merger of dearness allowance. We thank the team of the
Negotiating Committee of IBA for this forward movement in the discussions.
The date for the
next round of discussions will be decided in due course.

Modi gets Invitation to visit & speak House of Commons
London/New Delhi, Aug.13 (ANI): India groups of the United Kingdom's two main political parties-the Conservative Party and the Labour Party -- have invited Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modito visit the country.
The Labour Friends of India chairman, Barry Gardiner, sent a letter to Modi last week, inviting him to the House of Commons to speak on 'The Future of Modern India.'
"The invitation is a culmination of several years of engagement between senior representatives of the Labour Party and Narendra Modi," Gardiner was quoted by media, as saying.
"I am sure people in the UK and indeed the international community would be very interested to meet and hear what Narendra Modi has to say first hand. He is a politician who cannot be ignored. I believe it's in Britain's best interests that we engage with him as both the Chief Minister of Gujarat and also potential Prime Minister," he added.
"I, like many colleagues within the Labour Party, look forward to welcoming Chief Minister Modi to the UK. I last had the pleasure of meeting him in Gujarat in 2009. His return visit to the UK is long overdue," said Stephen Pound, former chair of Labour Friends of India.
In a rare show of political unity, the Conservative Friends of Indiaissued their own invite for Modi on August 9.
"It would be a great privilege for us to host an event for you. I very much hope that you will take us up on this invitation when opportunity allows," wrote Sailesh Vara, the Tory MP for North West Cambridgeshire. (ANI)
